Regional Business Development Officer Baltics and Finland

Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Estonia

Job description

Starting date: in August
Job ad deadline: 19 May
Hours: 38 hours per week (fulltime)

The Regional Business Development Officer (BDO) Baltics and Finland will be part of a team created to strengthen economic diplomacy in the Nordics and Baltics. The objective is to capitalize on business opportunities through identifying promising projects and helping Dutch companies to be successful. The RBD team proactively facilitates and supports trade and knowledge transfer in a complementary role to the embassy network.

The BDO's work will be cross-border in nature, focusing particularly on fostering business connections and investments between the Netherlands and Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland. Priority sectors mostly relate to sustainability and mitigation of climate change, for example sustainable energy (offshore wind, electricity storage, clean hydrogen), sustainable construction (buildings, infrastructure, circular transition) and smart logistics for sustainable cities, including mobility.
The employee will be based in Tallinn in the premises of the Netherlands Embassy in Tallinn.

Main activities

Under coordination of the Regional Business Developer, and in close cooperation with the economic teams at the Netherlands embassies in the Baltics and Finland, the BDO will:
  • Identify opportunities in the Baltics and Finland for Dutch companies and research institutes;
  • Develop initiatives which help individual companies to bring their innovative and sustainable products and services to the market;
  • Build and maintain a network of public organizations, knowledge organizations and private companies to broker opportunities;
  • Draft detailed project plans, including a financial paragraph;
  • Carry out plans and activities for Dutch companies and research institutes; including the organization and preparation of conferences, seminars and missions;
  • Promote Dutch expertise and development of sustainable business solutions, including through social media;
  • Follow-up on incoming queries in relation to ongoing projects.

Profile

The role of the BDO as a member of the Regional Business Development team requires a pioneering spirit and attitude, entrepreneurship, initiative, communication skills, flexibility - including readiness to travel frequently - and enthusiasm to cooperate within the embassy network.

Please be aware that a certificate of a non criminal-record will be required after the applicant passes the selection process. The costs will be reimbursed.

Knowledge and skills requirements

  • Minimally higher professional education, but preferably university graduate on a masters levels (business administration or related fields);
  • Affinity and 3-5 years of relevant experience with commercial work, market analyses and project planning and management. Affinity with the focus sectors in the region is considered an advantage;
  • Ability to independently signal and analyse relevant developments in the Netherlands and the local markets relevant for Dutch businesses, and act upon them;
  • A team-player with good communication and networking skills.
  • Talent for coordinating and organizing events, including programmes for visiting delegations;
  • Basic knowledge or willingness to learn about the Dutch economy and international economic policy, including the (financial) programmes and instruments open for Dutch businesses doing business internationally;
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken). Knowledge of Dutch and/or one of the Baltic languages or Finnish is an additional asset.

Work environment

The BDO will be part of a Regional Business Development (RBD) Team consisting of a coordinating Regional Business Developer based in Denmark and a BDO for Scandinavia based in Gothenburg. The RBD team meets regularly, both online as well as in person. The BDO will officially be based at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Tallinn, but is an integral part of the Embassy teams in Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius and Helsinki, and meets with them regularly online and in person. This means that the position includes regular travelling to the Netherlands and in the Baltic region and Finland. The Embassy also offers the possibility for flexible working, after consultation and when work permits.

The team at the Embassy in Tallinn is devoted to modern diplomacy. The working environment is open, informal, trusting and result-oriented.
The Embassy is a trustworthy employer with favourable secondary employment conditions (e.g. provisions for working from home; opportunity for work-related and personal development training).
